Forrygende, topanmeldt luksus-Chianti Classico fra Mazzei.
Denne fornemme Chianti Classio Gran Selezione, tager sit navn efter godset Fonterutoli, der ligger i hjertet af Chianti. Der hører i alt 5 vinmarker til Fonterutoli, der ligger mellem 230 og 500 meter over havets overflade. Høstudbyttet herfra er lavt, men til gengæld er kvalitet i top med masser af intensitet og koncentration i druerne.
Her er der som nævnt tale om husets Gran Selezione, en nyere betegnelse, der er klassen over Riserva. Et af kravene til Gran Selezione indebærer, at al frugt skal komme fra husets egne marker.
Her udmønter det sig i en storslået Chianti skabt på Sangiovese, med druens helt karakteristiske duft og smag af syrlige kirsebær, tobak, læder, fyldig struktur, markante tanniner træ fra 18 måneders fadlagring samt den smukkeste teglstensrøde farve i glasset. En stor vin, der emmer af alt det bedste fra Toscana.

Made with vines closest to the winery headquarters in the village of Castellina (spanning six clones and eight massal selections of Sangiovese), the Mazzei 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castellina Castello Fonterutoli stands somewhere between the broad, warm appeal of Castelnuovo Berardenga and the more acidic wines from Radda. This happy middle ground is characterized by mid-weight texture and very bright cherry aromas that are especially easy to identify. There is a hint of crushed stone that frames the generous fruit in this 47,000-bottle release. The wine undergoes 18 months in oak with an additional four months in cement to integrate.
James Suckling - 95
Really beautiful aromas of violets, berries, sandalwood and cherries. It’s medium-bodied with round and polished tannins that run the length of the wine and show lovely finesse and focus. Juicy at the end. Needs two or three years to open and show what it has. Drink after 2026.
Falstaff Magazin - 94
Intense, sparkling ruby with purple reflections. Multi-layered, exciting bouquet with notes of juicy cherry, pepper, coffee and ebony. Very juicy, with lush fruit on the palate, with well-integrated tannins and invigorating acidity through to the long finish.
Decanter - 93
Totalling 60,000 bottles, this represents the most plentiful of Castello Fonterutoli’s UGA-specific Gran Selezione bottlings. Selected from the estate’s top parcels in Castellina’s upper slopes on limestone-rich stony soil, the 2021 is a delightful tangle of wild forest herbs and cedar with liquorice and sarsaparilla roots. The fruit is pure with a satisfying, supple chew: layers of concentrated dark cherry are hemmed in by firm, sturdy tannins. Self-assured in personality and balanced in its elements, it just needs another year or two for everything to fully mesh.

Dusty cherry, black currant, violet and cedar flavors mark this inviting, open-knit red. Vibrant and endowed with refined tannins, lending harmony and driving the extended aftertaste. Drink now through 2038. 3,900 cases made, 390 cases imported.
